There is a big popularity at the moment and hype about reformer classes so let me get technical for this post 🤓

There are many hybrid versions of reformer inspired machines that have been modified in multiple ways to the traditional one that Joseph Pilates designed and invented.

  • The new hybrid versions of Reformer Pilates Classes use multiple types of reformer inspired machines with the whole session being on that machine.
  • For the authentic Joseph Pilates Method you would use a variety of studio apparatus which does include a large proportion being on the reformer but this wouldn’t be the only machine you would use.

Hybrid vs Authentic Reformer Machines

Some people are not aware that there has been changes and not all reformers are the same or even feel similar in the body. You can’t do Joe’s original work on non authentic apparatus. To preform the authentic Joseph Pilates Method it must be on more classical apparatus designed to Joe’s original specifications and dimensions.

Some differences that are unique to the authentic more classical reformers are as follows ;

  • The wheels are heavier – they create a drag as you pull the carriage in connecting you deeper to your powerhouse and requiring more effort to close the carriage. Hybrid carriages fly in without the same resistance.
  • The straps are leather not rope and they are attached within the frame of the reformer and are not on risers.
  • There are 3 gears which can both challenge or support you.
  • The springs are all the same tension and there is 4 of them. The tension and balance of the springs is important to the exercises Joe invented.
  • The handles are much different. They are handles not loops.
  • The footbar is different as it is not fixed to allow for dynamic flow during transitions from exercise to exercise. You can adjust its position freely with your feet while still on the carriage.
  • Joseph Pilates created the dimensions and specifications especially to work perfectly with his own pilates exercises he created.

Your Choice

Everyone has a choice and their own preferences and you may prefer the hybrid reformer machines rather than the ones Joseph Pilates invented. I have been on both and personally prefer the authentic type as then I can do all of Joseph Pilates exercises, plus it feels better in my body.

I do enjoy a hybrid Reformer for non pilates exercises and some rehab general work but not for Pilates.

Whether you love Joseph Pilates authentic original method or you enjoy Hybrid Pilates there are many differences and they are not the same. You have to experience the differences then you can make your own decision.
