I know reformer classes are so popular at the moment, so if you’re new to the reformer or thinking about trying Pilates for the first time, let me share with you that Reformer Pilates is hard!
I can absolutely get you on the Reformer and we can see assess your control and strength, developing the moves depending on your body.
Reformer Pilates is a specialised type of Pilates workout that uses a machine called a … Reformer! The Reformer has adjustable springs for resistance allowing the machine to adjust to your own ability. While it may look easy at first glance, the ability to control the machine and your body while performing Pilates movements makes it much harder than it seems. Doing it properly requires control, a strong core, and full body strength. So big classes on TikTok might look fun but when you are new to spring resistance privates are safer and ultimately, more effective.
You will know that I am a big advocate for the authentic Joseph Pilates Method, and here you would use a variety of the studio apparatus which includes a large proportion being on the reformer but not it wouldn’t be the only thing you would use – depending on your bodies needs.
As a professional Pilates teacher, if you’re new to Pilates or starting our in your fitness journey, I would strongly recommend that you should only have privates or duos on the Reformer as you and the machines require hands on assistance and a careful eye from the instructor. I only have one pair of hands and I want you to get the max that you can out of a session but staying safe, and building that strength.
If you want to do a class with friends to share the cost of a private class, three people would be my maximum on equipment where springs are involved (unless you are a teacher or advanced client) because it can be very dangerous with no assistance.
I can build up the exercises and the strength and balance you need. Hands on and careful guiding from a teacher is so important. Even athletes need to start with the basics – just because you are starting already strong doesn’t mean your body can go straight into advanced Pilates exercises.
Saying that I would always encourage anyone to give the Reformer – and the other equipment in the studio – a try! Just remember, everyone has to start somewhere so never be afraid of trying something new. It’s OK not to be good on your first try and you will get there!
